Chapter Thirteen – Falling

I felt somewhat bad at the fact that I didn’t hear a word Dray was saying when he poured out intimate details about his life. With a fucked up life like mine, I couldn’t see past all the shit I was buried in.

Immediately after Dray finished laying out all of his likes and dislikes he asked me if I wanted to go back to his place. I accepted his invitation. “Sure,” I told him.

During the commute he told me a few years earlier he had been laid up in the hospital from six gunshot wounds. He said after God gave him a chance to live, he decided to turn over a new leaf. I thought it was brave of him to divulge that type of information. I was more shocked than anything. Normally cats wouldn’t give out that type of information. Niggas I grew up with in the hood kept their lips tight about their life and the shit they went through. So there was no doubt in my mind that this guy was cut from a different cloth. I was becoming more intrigued by the minute. But I had to know why he was inside of a strip club if he had turned over a new leaf. So, I asked him.

“What were you doing at the club on the night I met you?”

“I only went there so I could get out of the house.”

“You sure you weren’t there trying to pick up one of those chicks?” I pressed the matter.

“Of course not. I went there for a couple of drinks and then I went back home.”

“That’s it?”

“Yeah, that’s it.” He assured me.

I gave him the funny eye to let him know that the jury was still out and that I wasn’t the type of chick that believed everything a man told me. He smiled. “Don’t smile at me.” I said jokingly. “I’ve been around cats like you with those pretty teeth and handsome smiles.” I added.

“I’m not like those other cats. I’m a good guy.” He told me. He sounded very sincere.

I smiled at him so hard I knew he saw all of my teeth. And before I realized it, I told him I was falling for him. Yeah, that’s how comfortable I had gotten with the dude. I was already pouring my heart out to him. Maybe it was a mistake, but I was thinking more with my heart than my head that night. Don’t ask me what it was about him that made me immediately put my guard down with him, but I did. I guess it was a combination of shit.

When we got to Dray’s building, I was even more impressed with this dude. I knew from being a native of Atlantic City, the building Dray lived in was one of those places where you had to show them the money before they even considered showing you a place to live in there. Shit, knowing my situation I didn’t even feel right walking in that expensive ass place.
